Chapter 22: Witch-Touched
"Witch-touched," I said. "On whose word?"
"On the word of half your valley, my lord." Mechthild Sturm smiled up at me. "You'll hear every one of them."
The justiciar stepped forward and read the summons.
The Lord of Velde would answer the charge before the king's court at Hessa in fifteen days.
If the court found him witch-touched, he would forfeit his land, his title and every right he held.
And every woman in Velde's lodge would be the Finders' to take.
Mechthild didn't say that last part out loud.
She didn't need to.
The court at Hessa sat in the long hall of the guildhouse, the same building whose steps she had sat on at the River Fair.
On the fifteenth day of May it was packed to the doors.
The justiciar sat at a high table under the king's arms, in his red robe.
Mechthild sat at a small table to his left with one book in front of her.
I sat at a small table to his right with Gerd.
Anke was four days away, in my lodge, with eighteen other women.
I had made her swear to stay there.
She had sworn it.
"The law is short," Mechthild began, standing. "A lord who knowingly uses a witch's gift is witch-touched."
