Chapter 38: The Lammas Race
Lorenz's POV
"Then we'll go through it," I said.
The chief laughed and blew his whistle for the crowd, and they laughed with him.
It was the biggest crowd I had ever seen at Hessa.
The whole Lammas Fair had come down to the river.
People stood on both banks all the way up the long reach toward the Upper Weir.
The river lords and their ladies had a striped awning on top of the near tower.
My cousin Ottmar sat under it among them, with a spyglass in his lap, and lifted his hat to me.
The league's barge lay beside ours at the quay.
It carried the same load as mine, ten tons of salt in sacks.
Twenty horses stood harnessed to it on the towpath, two by two.
Their drivers wore the league's blue.
The lord of the Upper Weir had ridden up to his own weir at dawn to drop the flag at the finish.
The chain hung between the two towers above us.
When a league barge came up, the men in the near tower turned a great windlass.
The chain sank to the riverbed, and the boat passed over it.
For anyone else they left it up.
"Ready, Lord of Velde?" the chief called.
