Chapter 40: The Gun That Burst
I didn't chase him.
A man who has been in a cage under a river gets to choose where he goes next, even if he chooses wrong.
But two weeks later a letter came from Kronhal with Ottmar's seal on it.
"The crown's new foundry fires its first gun on the fifteenth," it said. "Come and watch, cousin. You'll know the smith."
The king rode down to Kronhal with us on the barge, because he'd never been on a boat that didn't need horses.
He sat on the deck in a fur rug for four days and asked Anke a hundred questions about the boiler.
The foundry stood on the riverbank below the palace, a long brick shed with three chimneys.
Half the court had come out to stand in the yard in their silks.
The gun lay on a timber carriage at the far end, pointing at a bank of earth.
It was iron, as long as two men, black and new.
The smith from Steinau stood beside it in a leather apron with his arms folded.
When he saw me, he looked at the ground.
Ottmar came across the yard to meet us with both hands out.
