Chapter 55: The Black Coats

Market day in Hessa was the day after tomorrow.

The river from Kronhal up to Hessa was three days' work for a boat against the current.

Anke was already pulling her boots back on.

"Then it's a day and a half," she said. "Get the smith's boy up. We're going now."

We went out of Kronhal in the dark with the boiler roaring and the whistle tied down.

She sat at the firebox all night and all the next day, and she didn't once take her hands off the back plate.

"You're showing off," I said.

"I've been saving it up all winter," she said, and grinned at me with her face shining with sweat.

We came round the bend below Hessa at mid-morning on market day.

The old stone bridge stood below the quay, five arches across the river, with the market on both its ends.

In the middle of the bridge stood a knot of men in black coats.

The Finders had been broken two summers ago, when their Charter burned, and these were what was left of them.

Some of them still had the iron badges pinned to their collars.

A woman stood among them with her back to the parapet and a child in her arms.
