Chapter 17: The Note I Never Wrote
Simon's POV
By ten on Tuesday night, the conference table was covered in paper, and I had made my decision about the surgery.
"We keep your medical file out of the hearing," I said. "Gilbert's lawyer wants a woman who can't think straight. So we don't hand him the scar."
Abigail stood at the window with her arms folded.
"No."
"Abby."
"I have a patch on my head the size of a coin. I wear a scarf and a clip over it, and I've done it for six weeks." She turned. "I'm done covering things."
"This is a judge, not a dinner party."
"Then he should see exactly what he's judging."
She took the clip out of her hair and tossed it on the table.
"Put it in the record. The aneurysm, the surgery, the letter from the surgeon. Put in the date and the name of the nurse. I found it myself, I booked it myself, and I am the only person in this case who has seen a doctor."
I looked at her for a long moment.
I had been trying to protect her for seventeen years, and she had never once asked me to.
"You'll have to say it out loud," I said. "In front of Gilbert."
"I've said worse in front of Gilbert."
"You'll have to show it."
"Then come here and look at it."
I had not expected that.
She sat down in the chair across from me and bent her head.
I stood, because there was no other honest option, and I parted her hair with two fingers above her left ear.
The scar was a neat curved line, pink and closed.
