Chapter 4: Speak Now
My mother signed herself out of the hospital against medical advice at one o'clock.
By four she was in the front pew of St. Brendan's in a pale blue dress, with her right arm in a white sling.
The altar guild ladies had made a circle around her.
One of them was holding her good hand.
I watched through the crack of the side door in my wedding dress, with a bandage under my veil where the tea had burned my cheek.
"Everyone knows by now," said the housekeeper, who had come in her good dress to do my buttons. "Dale told them at the door. He said you had a breakdown."
"What did you say?"
"That you looked perfectly well to me."
She did up the last button, and her hands were not steady.
The organ started.
I walked down the aisle by myself, since the only person who might have walked me was sitting in the front pew in a sling.
Everett was waiting at the altar in a dark suit.
He looked at my cheek and smiled anyway.
The officiant welcomed everyone and went through the opening in a warm, steady voice.
Then he reached the part he had said at a hundred weddings.
"If anyone here knows a reason these two should not be joined, speak now, or forever hold your peace."
My mother stood up.
She did it slowly, with her good hand on the pew in front of her, so everyone could see what it cost her.
"I'm sorry," she said. Her voice shook just enough. "I wasn't going to say anything. But I can't let my daughter walk into a marriage with this on her conscience."
The church was silent.
"Last night, my daughter stabbed me," Mom said.
Somebody gasped on the groom's side.
"I'm her mother. I forgive her. But I won't pretend I didn't see it."
