Chapter 6: She Isn't Sick Tonight

Everett put his hand flat on the door and looked at me.

"I'm calling my driver," he said. "He's two floors down. We open this when he's here."

I nodded, and my mouth had gone dry.

I dressed in the dark while he made the call, pulling on his shirt because it was the closest thing.

The knock came again, soft and even.

"Callie? I know it's late."

The driver arrived in four minutes.

He was a heavy man in his fifties, and he stood in the corridor beside Sloane without touching her.

Everett opened the door and stepped into the gap.

I stood behind his shoulder.

Sloane did not try to come in.

Her hair was flat on one side, and her red lipstick had worn off at last.

Without it she looked about fifteen.

"Hi," she said, to me, over Everett's arm.

"Hi, Sloane."

"I'm sorry about your wedding."

"It went fine."

"I'm glad." She swallowed. "Callie, what did I do?"

Nobody said anything.

"I woke up at the hospital and a nurse said I hurt Mom," Sloane said. "They told me I had a knife. I don't remember the knife. I remember going upstairs. I remember being so angry I couldn't see."

Her eyes were on my face.

"Is she dead?"

"No," I said. "She's alive. She's home, I think, or at the church. She'll be all right."

Sloane's shoulders came down with relief.

I watched it happen and felt something tilt in my chest.

In the other life she had never once asked about me.

She had stood over me with red hands and said, "Why do you always do this?" while I was still breathing.
