Chapter 5: Lirien Claims the Luna's Quarters

The relay message arrived mid-sentence.

Sera was holding Maren's testimony notes, her eyes on the line about the birth-swap, when the thin amber thread of a packmate's relayed thought cut through the quiet of the sanctuary room. She set the notes down and opened herself to it.

The room went amber. The walls of the sanctuary thinned and vanished, and she was standing in the Luna's suite.

Not standing. She was watching, carried inside a packmate's memory of it, the scene rendered in the low gold shimmer that meant she was reading someone else's unspoken thoughts beneath the spoken words. Lirien stood in the center of the suite in a white dress that fell to her ankles. Elder Cass beside her, one hand raised in formal endorsement. The pack below the balcony, and their approval rolling up like a tide.

White. Pack law reserved white for a confirmed bond.

The wave of sound broke over the balcony. Sera heard it twice: the roar itself, and underneath it, the second track, the packmate's private thought bleeding through in a voice that was not quite the one they used aloud.

She is wearing it. She is actually wearing it.

The packmate's horror was so bright it nearly drowned the scene. Sera let it run. It was useful, a witness who had not wanted to see what they were seeing, and the memory shook with it. Kael stood at the front, his face unreadable, his hands still at his sides. Lirien turned to him and smiled, and the crowd read it as tenderness.

Then Sera isolated it.

The ambient noise froze.

The crowd went silent mid-roar. The breeze on the balcony stopped. The only thing left moving in the whole amber-tinted scene was the thought that floated in full color, Kael's own register, the short clipped rhythm of a man who did not know he was being overheard.

Something is wrong and I cannot name it.

She held it there, the single damning sentence suspended in the frozen grove of the memory, and she listened to it twice. Three times. The way it snagged on the word name, as if he had been trying to put a word to it for weeks and failed.
