Chapter 8: The Gift With His Name on It

Kael unfolded the grant across her open journal, covering the page she had been writing on, and smoothed it flat with the side of his hand.

'Dov,' he said. 'Witness what I am offering her.'

Dov did not move from the stove. She had a rag over one shoulder and both hands wet, and she looked at the paper the way she looked at a wound she had not been called to treat.

Sera read it twice. The first pass was for the shape of it, the second for the words that had been chosen to hide inside the shape.

An estate on the eastern ridge. A physician retained to her household. Recognition of the children, in writing, under the pack seal. Every line of it generous. Every line of it careful.

The third clause was where he had buried it.

She put one finger on the sentence and turned the page toward him so he could see what she was reading. 'Guardianship vests in the Alpha,' she said. 'Not in the mother. In the Alpha.'

'That is how the form reads.'

'It is how you wrote it.'

Kael did not answer that. He had taken his insignia off hours ago and it was still sitting on the far side of her journal, and he kept not looking at it, which was its own kind of answer.

Sera let the silence work on him. It usually did. She had learned that from him, in the first life, before he had learned to use it on her.

'Read the next one,' she said.

He did not. So she read it for him, flat, without inflection, the way she would read a dosage. 'The mother's residence to be within pack territory, under pack protection, for the duration of the minority.' She looked up. 'Under pack protection. Under your protection. In your house.'

'The children would be safer inside the border.'

'The children would be yours inside the border.'

Dov set a cup down on the table with a click that was louder than it needed to be. Neither of them looked at her.

Kael leaned back. There was a version of him that could have argued this for an hour and won on procedure alone, and she watched him decide not to reach for it, which cost him something and which she filed away without letting her face change.
