Chapter 10: A Tuesday

I didn't say anything until we were inside the house with the door shut.

Then I turned around in the dark hall and hit him in the chest with both hands.

"You let me sign," I said.

He didn't move.

"A whole week of me lying to your face, and you just sat there and let me."

"Yes."

"You said you wouldn't ask. You knew the whole time."

"Yes."

"Why?" I hit him again, and my voice cracked. "Why didn't you say?"

"Because I walked in that room and saw you across the table," Dominic said, "and I didn't know if you were her."

I stopped.

"If I'd said it," he said, "and you didn't remember, you'd have thought I was either mad or sent by Nino. You'd have run. And if you did remember, and I'd said it first, then you'd have signed because I told you to. I wanted you to pick. You picked before I opened my mouth."

"That's not fair."

"No."

"I sat there, and I was so proud of myself."

"You should have been. You were magnificent." His mouth twisted. "You signed the Ferrante folder faster than I've ever seen anyone do anything."

I pushed my hair back with both hands.

The hall felt too small.

"Tell me," I said. "All of it. What you remember."

We sat on the stairs, side by side, with the front door locked and the lamp still burning in the corner.

He told it plainly.

In his first life, the contract had been Roisin's.

She had married him at twenty-two, and left him at twenty-five, for what she called a lack of ambition.

"I couldn't fight Nino," he said. "I had no men, no money, no way back into the city. She wanted to be a Don's wife and I couldn't give her that, so she went."

"I remember that part. She cried about it for a month."

"Did she?"

"For about a week. She called it the worst mistake of her life, and then she went shopping."

He almost smiled.

"I heard about the babies from Benny," he said. "He had a cousin who worked at the hospital. I heard about the first one, and then the second. I heard about the doctor who said it was bad luck, and I thought it was too many coincidences."

I felt very cold.

"You were looking into it."

"For years. I had nothing else to do." He rubbed his face. "I got the name of a nurse who'd worked for the Brancato family doctor. She was frightened. She'd tell me nothing. But she kept a copy of a lab report."
