Chapter 24: A Rainy Monday

It rained on the first Monday in April, and I came through the lobby doors at 8:52 with my umbrella dripping.

I had walked Junie to the school gate myself.

She had made me promise to be at the spring concert on Thursday, front row, with Annie beside me.

The lobby smelled of wet wool and coffee.

My name was on the wall now, on a brass plate beside the elevators.

I stopped under it for a moment, the way I did every Monday, and read it again.

A ring sat on my left hand, a plain gold band with a small grey stone.

In June I would marry Patrick at the lake, and Junie had already chosen a dress that spun all the way around.

The guard at the desk looked up and smiled.

"Morning, Ms. Kingscote."

"Good morning. Is it always this wet?"

"Only on Mondays."

I was halfway to the elevators when I heard the squeak of a wet shoe on marble.

A young woman had come through the revolving door behind me.

I had never seen her before.

She was perhaps twenty, staring down at the floor tiles as if trying to steady herself.

Her hair was plastered to her forehead, and she held a cardboard tray of four coffees against her chest.
