Chapter 21: The Contract

Calla's POV

I found it in the desk drawer two nights ago, while I was looking for a pen.

I had not mentioned it, because I did not know what I would say.

Now I held it up in the grey light of Ronan's study with my heart going hard.

It was one sheet, typed, with his signature at the bottom.

Separate rooms. No claiming bite. A year, and then I could leave, free and unhurt.

"You wrote me an exit," I said.

"I wanted you to have one."

"I know you did."

I walked across the room until I stood in front of him.

Then I tore the sheet in half.

I tore it again, and again, and let the pieces fall around our feet.

"I don't want a door," I said.

Ronan looked at the scraps on the floor.

His hands stayed at his sides.

"You've had a long day," he said, low. "You've been shot at and shouted at, and you stood in front of a hall full of wolves. You're running on whatever's left."

"Ronan."

"I won't be the thing you grab because you're shaking."

I laughed, because it was so exactly like him.

"I'm not shaking," I said. "And I can hear you."

Not like this. She'll wake tomorrow and wonder what she's done.

"Say it to my face," I said. "Say you don't want me to, and I'll go back to bed."

He did not say it.

His jaw worked, and his eyes went black, and I felt the whole room tighten.

I put my palm flat against his chest and pushed.

He went back one step, and another, until the edge of the desk chair caught the back of his knees and he sat down hard.
