Chapter 24: Milk

Rhett opened his mouth, and nothing came out.

The woman in the green dress took her hand off his arm.

"Rhett," she said. "Is that true?"

"She's lying. They're all..."

The broad man in the loose tie had come up behind him with his paper cup, and so had three women from our class.

"It's true," one of them said. "I was at that party."

"I was at the quarry," said another. "I saw him throw the money."

The woman in green looked at Rhett for a long moment.

Then she picked her purse off the floor and walked out through the double doors.

He called after her.

She did not turn around.

The circle of people closed up behind her, and Rhett stood alone in the middle of the gym with a plastic cup in his hand and the banner swaying overhead.

Nobody spoke to him.

After a while he went out the side door, and I never saw him again.

Erin squeezed my hand.

"Do you want to stay?" she asked.

"No."

"Good. Neither do I."

We drove home through the dark with the windows down.

It was a small house with a porch light, on a street a mile from my mother's, and it had a kitchen with a yellow table.

I sat on the edge of the bed in my shirtsleeves and listened to her moving around downstairs.

The clock on the nightstand said eleven fifty-three.

I had spent ten years not looking at that clock, and I looked at it.

The kitchen was quiet except for the sound of a saucepan being set on a burner.
