Chapter 20: Her Mother's Name

I gave the key to my father's head of security on the chapel lawn, behind a hedge, while the bagpipes warmed up.

He looked at it in his big palm.

"The white Range Rover," I said. "It's parked somewhere on campus. Nobody drives it today. Nobody."

"Understood."

He closed his hand.

Wyatt was watching the faculty lot over my head, where a campus police cruiser was already parked across the far exit.

"So he's bringing the Porsche," he said quietly.

"Or he's bringing nothing, and I'm wrong."

"You're not wrong."

The procession started at ten.

Six thousand people stood up as we came down the center aisle in our black gowns, row after row, the bell going over our heads.

Maisie sat beside him in a yellow sundress.

He gave me a thumbs-up.

Maisie mouthed, "RED," and fanned herself.

Wyatt was in the K's, nine rows ahead and four seats over.

I could see the back of his head the whole time.

At ten-forty, the president of the university introduced the senior class speaker.

The applause was thinner than it would have been a month ago.

But it was still applause.

Brock walked to the podium with the gold stole over his shoulders and the speaker's medal on its blue ribbon around his neck.

He looked out at six thousand people and smiled.

Off to the left, in the family seats, a small woman in a lilac dress was already crying with pride.

She had his sandy hair and his dimple.

Brock opened with my first sentence, the one about the lemons.

The quad went quiet for a good opening line.
