Chapter 13: Rot in Hell
Gabriel's POV
Trenton came down the slope with his hands open and his jacket flapping.
He was out of breath. His tie was crooked.
I had seen that look on him a hundred times in my life, and I had always read it as worry.
"Thank God," he said again. "You're soaked, Gabe. Is she breathing?"
"She's breathing."
"I saw the taxi take the lake road. The hospital called me when she ran." He knelt on the planks beside Rosalind and touched her hair. "Ros. Sweetheart. It's me."
Rosalind flinched so hard that her head hit the wood.
She looked at me. Her eyes were huge.
She did not say a word, and she did not have to.
I looked at Trenton's shoes.
They were dry. There was no mud on them, and no grass.
The path down to the dock was wet clay the whole way, and I had slid on it myself.
"How did you get down here without a mark on you?" I said.
Trenton glanced down at his feet and then up at me, and he laughed once.
"I parked at the boathouse. I know this place, Gabe. I've known it since we were boys."
That was true. He had taught me to skip stones off this dock.
It was the first thing I thought of, and I made myself put it away.
"Of course," I said.
Camille was standing a pace behind me with her hand pressed against her pocket.
She did not look at Trenton once. She was looking at the road.
I understood that she had her phone in that pocket, and that it was still recording.
"The ambulance is five minutes out," Trenton said. "I'll ride with her. You two need to get dry."
