Chapter 17: The Trust
The chairman opened the blue file and read the third page, and his face changed as he read.
He passed it to the director on his left without a word.
It went around the table hand to hand. Nobody spoke.
"Read it out," I said. "For the minutes."
The chairman cleared his throat.
"The trust holds sixty-one percent of the voting shares of the Lockwood Group," he read. "Control passes to Camille Lockwood on her twenty-fourth birthday."
"That was last spring," I said.
"No removal of the chief executive takes effect without the written consent of the controlling shareholder."
"I don't consent," I said. "Not to this, and not to anything Mr. Hightower puts in front of you."
Trenton laughed softly.
"Cami. Sweetheart. This is a family document. It can't possibly mean."
"There's a second clause," the chairman said. He had stopped looking at Trenton. "If Gabriel Lockwood marries without his sister's written consent, he forfeits his shares, his properties, and his office."
Gabriel went rigid beside me.
He had not known. I saw it hit him: all the weeks of ordering me around, and the whole time I had been holding his house in my hand.
"You could have taken everything at any point," he said quietly.
"I could have."
"Why didn't you?"
"I wanted to see what you'd do with a month," I said.
He didn't answer. His eyes had gone wet, and he turned his face away.
"As of this minute," I said, "my proxy to him is revoked. Every vote the trust holds is mine. Mr. Chairman, your motion is void."
