Chapter 22: The Baby

Gabriel drove me to the clinic, and I made him wait in the corridor.

"I'm not coming in," he said. "I know."

"Good. You'd make it worse."

The nurse took me down a white hall to a room at the end. I heard Rosalind before I saw her.

She was on the bed with her hair stuck to her face and her knuckles white on the rail.

"You came," she gasped.

"I said I would."

"You said you wouldn't." She laughed, and it turned into a sob. "Nobody else is coming. My mother won't pick up. He."

"He's in a cell," I said. "Breathe."

"Don't tell me to."

"Breathe anyway."

She grabbed my good hand and crushed it, and I let her.

A doctor stood at the foot of the bed with a screen on a stand.

"We need to hear the heartbeat," she said. "Miss Ellery, hold still."

Rosalind stopped breathing altogether.

The doctor pressed the probe to her stomach and moved it. The screen flickered with gray.

For a long, terrible moment there was nothing.

Then a fast, wet, galloping sound filled the room.

"There," the doctor said. "A hundred and sixty. That is a strong heartbeat."

Rosalind burst into tears.

I found I was crying too, which I had not planned on.

"The bleeding is from a small tear," the doctor said. "It isn't the placenta. She needs bed rest, and she needs to stay calm. If she does, she'll carry him to term."

"Him?" Rosalind whispered.
