Chapter 20: Savannah's Bill

Dad's hand stayed on Luka's shoulder for a long second.

Luka didn't push back.

He only stood there, tall and calm, with his glasses a little crooked.

"Mr. Thayer," he said. "A judge would call that a shove. I'd hate to be the one to tell her. I'm only a third-year."

"Take your hand off him, Phillip," said Grandma.

Behind us, my cousin was still filming.

Dad looked at the phone, and then at the empty chairs, and his arm came slowly down.

Nobody had ever seen him lose, I thought.

It looked like a building settling.

"You will regret this," he said to me, very quietly.

"Probably," I said. "Not tonight."

He turned and walked out of the dining room and into his study, and the door shut behind him.

That left Mom.

She was still sitting at the foot of the table with her pearl earrings catching the light, and she did not look at me.

She was looking at Savannah.

Savannah had slid down the sideboard to the floor, still in her navy dress, with the gold phone in her lap.

"Mom," she said. "Mom, tell them it wasn't me."

"Get up."

"I did what you said. All of it. I deleted the account, I wiped the iPad..."

"Get up, Savannah."

Savannah got up.

She was swaying.

"The relatives have left," Mom said. Her voice was perfectly reasonable, as though she were discussing a seating plan. "Your father and I will need to say something to them in the morning. We'll say you were unwell. That you acted alone."

"Alone?"

"You took the money. You posted the account. You put the brooch in her suitcase. That's all true."
