Chapter 5: The Cashier's Check

I went down alone, and Luka came down two steps behind me and pretended he was checking the mail.

The lobby had cracked tile and a wall of dented mailboxes.

Mom stood in the middle of it in a camel coat, holding a leather folder against her chest.

The family driver waited by the door with his hands folded.

"Cadence," she said. "Sweetheart."

She opened her arms.

I didn't move, and she lowered them slowly.

"How did you find me?" I said.

"The family plan. Your father set it up so we could always see where you were." She tried a smile. "I'm so glad you're safe."

"I'm turning it off today."

"Of course you are."

She said it so easily that I almost believed she meant it.

"I owe you an apology," she said. "I should have watched the accounts. I trusted Savannah, and that was my failure, not yours. She's with my sister in Connecticut, and she isn't going to be at the house for a long while."

"That's nice of you."

"I've brought you something."

She opened the folder and took out a cashier's check.

Twenty-four thousand dollars, made out to me.

"Three months of what you were owed," she said. "The whole amount. Nobody is going to say we didn't make this right."

I held it.

It was a real piece of paper with a real bank's name printed across the top.

"There's one more thing, a formality." She slid a second sheet out of the folder. "A receipt, for your father's accountants."
