Chapter 20: Seven Men

By Wednesday morning, forty donors had read Bryson's email.

Eleven of them had called me to ask if it was true.

I answered the same way every time.

"Come to the foundation at nine and ask him yourself."

The conference room on the second floor was full by five minutes to.

Donors sat in their good coats with coffee going cold, and the board sat along the far wall.

My father sat in a chair by the window with his nurse, because he had refused to stay home.

Elias stood beside the door in a dark suit, with his hands at his sides.

He had said nothing since we left the Pellam house.

At nine, Bryson walked in.

Nobody had invited him.

He was shaved and pressed, in his blue shirt, and the old smile was back in place like something he had put on in the car.

"Forgive me for coming," he said gently to the room. "I only want everyone to be safe."

"You can sit," I said.

"I'll stand." He took a stack of printed pages from his briefcase and passed them down the table. "These are public records and a sworn statement from the attorney who kept the widow's trust fund this man drained."

The pages went from hand to hand.

I watched faces change.

"Seven men," Bryson said. "Seven families this man has broken. A bookkeeper, a car dealer, a delivery driver. Ask yourselves why Diana Pellam, a woman in her father's hospital room only three weeks ago, would stand beside him."

An older donor cleared his throat.

"Mr. Rooke," he said. "Is this accurate?"

"Yes," Elias said.

The room stopped.

Bryson's smile widened.
