Chapter 23: The Terrace Door

I still had the wireless microphone in my hand.

I walked down the steps and across the ballroom floor with four hundred people watching.

At the terrace door, Elias was already standing with his shoulder against the frame.

He had been there since the moment they went through it.

"An inch," he said quietly.

I knelt, set the microphone on the stone threshold in the gap, and switched it on so its sound ran to every speaker in the room.

Then I stood back and let it listen.

I heard Marcy first.

"It's over, it's over, they have the thermos, they have the pharmacy girl..."

"Be quiet," Bryson said.

"You said she'd be too sick to stand by now!"

"It would have worked if you hadn't been so greedy with the old man's pills."

"That was your plan, the mints!"

Every voice in the ballroom had stopped.

I could hear the river.

"I did everything you asked," Marcy said, and she was crying. "I sat by his bed and cried for him. I put the capsule in his tin. I smiled at her for ten years..."

"You didn't have to say it out loud," Bryson said.

"Her father's signature was easy. You said that. You said hers would take a year, and tonight we'd be done."

That was the sentence.

I had heard it once before, through a glass door, with my hands going numb.

Bryson said it again, a year early, into a microphone he didn't know was there.

"It was easy," he said. "It was easy, and then she woke up and ruined it."

I closed my eyes.

When I opened them, the man in the plain suit was walking down the aisle with two uniformed officers behind him.
