Chapter 17: The Shower
The room went up like a wedding.
Two hundred women clapped.
Somebody's aunt shouted "Auguri!" and somebody else started crying into a napkin.
My mother stood up at the head table and kissed Valentina on both cheeks, then held her face.
A few women turned in their chairs to look at me.
I knew some of those faces.
They had sat in the pews at my wedding three years ago, whispering five.
"Poor thing," one of them said. "She came anyway."
I smiled at her and raised my glass of ginger ale.
At the head table, Cesare's mother didn't clap.
She sat with her hands folded on her mink and watched Valentina.
Connie was beside me in a green dress she'd borrowed from a girl in her clinical group.
She leaned over.
"If I bite through this glass," she said through her teeth, "you'll stitch me, right?"
"You're the nurse."
"Nursing student. I'm allowed to faint."
Valentina sat down in a white wicker throne somebody had wrapped in tulle.
The gifts came one at a time, carried up by the little cousins.
A stroller that cost more than my van.
A silver rattle from Tiffany.
