Chapter 31: New Locks
I held the paper and the keys in my lap.
"Every lock," I said.
"Every lock."
"You know what that means. You'll be standing outside your own study waiting for your wife to let you in."
"The study doesn't have a door anymore," he said. "I took it off at six this morning. It's in the garage."
I got up and went to the top of the stairs in his shirt.
He was right.
Down the hall, the study stood open to the landing, the hinges bare, the old clock ticking where anybody could hear it.
"The security man helped," Cesare said behind me. "He asked if I'd been drinking."
It took me two weeks to rekey the house.
I did it the way Nonno taught me, one door at a time, with the house's whole plan drawn out on butcher paper on my workbench.
Every bedroom. The gate. The garage. The pool house, which I rekeyed twice, out of spite.
The safe room I did with the security man watching, and when I set the new override, I typed my own name in the holder field.
Holder: L. Bruno.
Nobody else's.
I built the system so one key opened everything.
Mine.
Then I cut every other key in the house to open only the doors it needed.
