Chapter 11: The Spotter
Dell's cabin sat at the end of a dirt road, on a gray lake with no boats.
I parked Carys's truck behind a stand of mesquite, a hundred yards back.
"You're sure about this?" Carys asked.
"No."
"Good," she said. "Neither am I."
She took the old rifle from the rack behind the seat and put it across her knees.
"If he draws on you, I'll hit what I aim at," she said.
"What do you aim at?"
"Anything that's trying to kill you," she said. "You owe me for that bull, and dead men don't pay."
"I thought last night squared us."
"We're even on that," she said. "Now go."
I got out and walked down the road with my hands empty and my phone in my pocket, recording.
Dell was on the porch in a lawn chair.
He had a cooler of beer and a pistol on the arm of the chair.
The pistol was in plain sight.
I stopped at the bottom of the steps.
"You didn't come to sleep," he said.
"No."
"I figured." He nodded slowly and picked up the beer. "You were always a smart one."
I took the envelope out of my jacket and dropped it in his lap.
"Two thousand dollars," I said. "I never touched it."
He stared at it.
"That's what she paid you for the ridge?" I asked.
The beer stopped halfway to his mouth.
"What did you say?"
"Fifty thousand up front. Half the death benefit," I said. "It's all in your texts to Cassidy. My daughter took her mother's burner out of a box and gave it to me."
He did not move at all.
"Poppy did that?"
"Poppy did that."
His face crumpled.
I had seen men's faces break before, but never one I had shared a foxhole with.
