Chapter 15: What Damon Knew

"Damon was in the office," the woman said again.

She did not want to come to the pack hall with us.

I did not ask twice.

At South Rail she took the upstairs room and locked its door from inside.

I went to Damon with Valerio, who waited by the hall entrance.

Bianca stood beside the reception desk, speaking to a woman from the pack.

She saw me and went quiet.

Damon came out of his father's office holding a green ruled ledger.

"You summoned the register," he said.

"I want to see it before you take it to the tribunal."

"You can see it there."

I looked at the clean black line through my mother's name.

"Your father crossed her out. She was still working here."

"People worked after they left the pack."

"You were here when she refused to sign."

The ledger shifted in his hands.

"I was a boy."

"Old enough to watch."

Bianca came closer, but Damon kept looking at me.

"My father handled debts," he said. "I didn't read every page."

"Did you read the one you used to evict the refuge?"

"I read what I needed to."

"Did you know at our ceremony that the thumbprint was false?"

A pack guard moved near the door.

Valerio stayed where I had asked him to stand.

Damon set the ledger on the counter.
