Chapter 18: The Challenge
"No," I said.
"She's my mother. It's my shame. Let me be the one who..."
"She didn't challenge you. She challenged me."
"She's fought for thirty years, Linnet. You've had a wolf for ten days."
"And you rejected me in front of three hundred people so you wouldn't have to stand next to that wolf." I held the door. "You don't get to stand in front of her now. Go home."
He stood in the snow for a long moment.
Then he went.
Twelve nights later, the Great Hall was full to the rafters again.
The same stands, packed with the same faces.
The long tables were gone, and the floor in front of the altar had been cleared down to bare flagstone in a wide ring.
Kinloch filled the back benches where the guests sat.
Greer had brought the flour sack, and nobody made her put it away.
The Moon Court elder sat in a chair beside the altar with her shawl over her knees, her blind eyes turned toward the ring.
Alaric stood at the altar step with his father.
His father had moved out of the Luna's house, and everybody knew it.
