I read the last line twice.
Then I folded the letter and looked at the rider.
"Tell your Alpha I'll stand," I said.
He bowed his head.
Not the little nod he'd given me in January.
All the way down.
The doors of the Great Hall were open on the night of the full moon, and the firelight came out across the snowmelt in a long gold path.
I walked up it in a white dress.
Greer had let the waist out twice in a week, and complained about it the whole time, and then cried when I tried it on.
The moonstone sat on my chest.
The torn rejection scroll was rolled up in my hand.
Rhys walked beside me.
Not behind.
Not in front.
Behind us came the whole of Kinloch, a hundred and twenty wolves in their best flannel, Greer at the front with the flour sack folded under her arm, Cressida beside her, and the midwife on the arm of a Kinloch man half her age, wearing her feathered hat.
The stands were full to the rafters.
Three hundred Stalbridge wolves.
The same faces.
They'd laughed at me from these seats in January, while I stood at that altar in my mother's dress.
