Chapter 4: White Fire

I took the summons out of the rider's hand.

"Tell your Luna I'll be there," I said. "Tell her to bring her proof. I'm bringing my mother's stone."

He looked at the moonstone on my chest.

It was glowing faintly in the gray morning.

He backed out the door without another word.

Greer shut it on him with her hip.

"An iron collar," she said. "Who even keeps one of those anymore?"

"Rosamund does," I said. "It hangs on the wall of her sitting room. She told me once it was a family heirloom."

"Charming woman."

Rhys was watching me across the table.

"You could stay on this side of the river," he said. "The court can't make you cross."

"And then I'm the thief who hid behind the Kinloch Alpha. Forever."

"I'd hide you forever. I'm just saying."

"I know you would." I turned the stone in my fingers. "I'm not hiding. But I don't know how to be what I am. I've had a wolf for twelve hours. I don't want to walk into that court and fall over my own feet."

Greer grinned.

"Then we run," she said.

An hour later I was standing in a snowy clearing above the hall in Greer's spare boots, with my clothes folded on a stump, freezing my backside off.

Greer was already a long-legged brown wolf bouncing in the drifts.

Rhys was a big dark shape at the tree line, nearly black, with a silver throat.

He'd turned his back while I undressed.

"How do I do it?" I called.

Greer's wolf sneezed at me.

Rhys's voice came into my head, low and amused, the way pack talk works between wolves.

"Stop asking how. Want to."

I wanted to.

She came.

Then I was on four feet in the snow, and the cold didn't touch me at all.

Fire ran along my back, pale as moonlight, and where my paws stood the snow went to steam.
