Chapter 12: Posy's Tea
"Jarek," I said. "What did you drink yesterday?"
He stared at the ceiling.
"Coffee. Water."
"What else?"
He didn't answer.
"The tea," I said. "Posy's tea. Your grandmother says she makes it every night and every morning."
His eyes came to mine, hard.
"My grandmother was here?"
"She was my patient before you were."
"She had no business telling you anything."
"She's worried about you. So am I, as your doctor." I held up the printout. "Lorazepam doesn't grow on a tree, Jarek. Somebody puts it in something. Think hard about what you eat and drink at home."
"Because of you," he said. "My grandmother says it's the Moon taking back what I threw away."
"It might be that too. This isn't the Moon." I tapped the paper. "This is a pharmacy."
Abel stood at the end of the cot with his arms folded.
He didn't say a word.
He was a lone wolf standing over a fallen Alpha, and every enforcer in the room had noticed.
Gravel crunched in the lot.
Three cars pulled in, one after the other, in a slow line.
The beta went to the window.
"The council," he said, under his breath.
They came in single file.
The senior Elder first, in his wool coat with the silver pin.
Two more Elders behind him.
And a tall young wolf of about twenty-eight with the senior Elder's straight back and none of his manners, who looked around our waiting room.
The senior Elder's grandson.
Last of all came Posy.
She was in a long cream coat and the lavender scarf was gone.
She carried a green steel thermos in both hands.
"Jarek," she breathed, and went straight past me to the cot.
She knelt beside him and touched his face.
"I was so scared. They wouldn't let me ride in the truck. I've been up all night."
