Chapter 22: County Jail
I turned around.
I put my hands behind my back.
The cuffs clicked twice.
Behind me, June said a word I'd never heard her use in front of her boys.
"Ma'am," the sheriff said to her. "Step back."
"I'll step back when I'm dead."
"June," I said. "Call his grandmother. Then go to Abel's. Don't leave her."
Abel was standing very close to me.
"I'll have you out by morning," he said.
"You don't know any lawyers."
"I know a bail bondsman. I stitched his ear."
The sheriff put his hand on top of my head and folded me into the back of the cruiser.
The door shut.
Through the window I saw the night clinic.
The sign with MOSTLY on it.
The laundress stood on the front step with her bandaged arm, the way she'd stood up in the courthouse gallery.
The rogue with the stitched scalp stood beside her.
They just watched him drive me away.
Halfway down the county road, his phone rang on the dash.
He answered it on the speaker without thinking.
"You got her?" said a dry, old voice.
The sheriff glanced at me in the mirror.
