Chapter 13: Phone Call
Dario left for the city at noon on Friday, and he did not take me.
"Two of the capos will see me today," he said at the car. "They won't talk if you're in the room."
"Are they the two who watched the wedding?"
"Yes. I need them in their chairs on Sunday."
He kissed me in front of Luca and the open door, long and hard, with his hand at my jaw.
Then the car pulled out between the gate posts, and the house went quiet.
I did the restaurant books in the afternoon because my hands needed a job.
The numbers came out right and I did not remember adding them.
At nine that night I went upstairs, shut the bedroom door and lay down on his side of the bed.
I wore his white shirt from the floor, and nothing else.
It smelled of him.
My phone lit up on the pillow.
"Are you on the bed?" Dario said.
His voice was low and close, and behind it I heard a room with no other sound in it.
"Yes."
"Which side?"
"Yours."
"Good girl."
I pressed my thighs together at the words, and he heard me breathe.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"A hotel suite on the fortieth floor. The last man left an hour ago."
"Did he agree?"
"He said he would think."
"That sounds like a no."
"It sounds like a man who wants to be asked again." His voice dropped. "I'm not talking about him tonight. Put me on speaker and set the phone by your head."
I did.
"Now unbutton the shirt. All of it."
I undid the buttons one at a time, slowly, and let the cotton fall open.
The air in the room touched my skin and I shivered.
"Tell me what you see."
"The ceiling."
"Elise."
"My breasts. My stomach." I swallowed. "Your shirt, open on either side of me."
"Touch yourself the way I would. Start with your nipples."
