Chapter 11: Gold Blood

The silver knife went into Bram's palm, and he did not even flinch.

He held his hand over the black stone, and one bright drop fell.

For a moment nothing happened.

Then the drop spread across the slab and turned the color of molten gold.

A gasp went through the hall.

"That's not possible," someone whispered on the benches.

The seer's apprentice leaned over the stone with her face gone white.

"The blood-stone only runs gold for the old alpha lines," she said. "It runs once for each line, and then it settles."

The gold held steady.

Then, slowly, a thread of dark red crept through it from the edge, and the stone showed two colors side by side.

"Two lines," the apprentice said. Her voice cracked. "Two alpha lines in one child."

"Whose?" Alpha Stagg demanded from his couch.

The girl looked at the red.

"The red is Ashfall," she said. "I know that mark. My mistress taught me. It's Farquharson blood, direct."

Every head in the hall turned.

Theron said, "No," in a small, hollow voice.

"Yes," I said.

I had not planned to say it.

The words simply came, in front of three hundred wolves and everyone I had ever hated.

"Their father is Lucan Farquharson, Alpha of Ashfall. He found me in a mountain pass when I was running from the tree my brother chained me to. I stayed with him thirty days. He swore to come back, and I believed him, and I was wrong about why he didn't."

I did not look at Lucan.

I could feel him behind me, utterly still.
