Chapter 4: Closed Only to Him

The Healer sat at my kitchen table with a cup of tea she did not drink.

Lucan stood by the door with his arms folded.

I stood by the stove with the poker still in my hand, because I had forgotten to put it down.

"Say it again," I said.

"I never told you that you were barren," the Healer said. "I told you nothing, child, because I was never allowed to speak to you."

"You held my wrist at the ceremony fitting."

"I did. And I tested your blood against Theron's, the way the law asks."

She turned the cup in her hands.

"They didn't answer each other. Not a flicker. His blood was shut to yours and yours was shut to his."

I stared at her.

"Shut," Lucan said quietly. "Meaning what?"

"Meaning they were never mates," the Healer said. "No bond between them could ever take, so no pup could come of it. That is all I found."

"That is not barren."

"No, it is not."

"Then what did you tell Perrin?"

"The truth. I told your brother first, because he was your guardian after your father died." She looked at her hands. "I said, 'Her blood is closed to Theron, not to the world. Find her a better match.'"

My ears were ringing.

"And Perrin said?"

"That he would tell you himself." Her voice dropped. "The next morning he told the whole pack that the Healer had found you barren. He stood in the square and said it, with your mother's locket in his fist."

I had been in the square that morning.
