Chapter 12: Her Sister's Face

Camille stood alone in the middle of the hall with her hands tied in front of her.

The guards stepped back.

Nine lords, the king, Torren, Dalton on his knees, and I all watched her, and she looked at none of them but me.

"Grandfather gave me the first tin when I was ten," she said. "He said it was medicine for you. He said you were sickly and the pack healer didn't want you to know."

"And you believed him," I said.

"I was ten. I thought I was helping."

Her voice was steady.

That was what I hated most.

"When did you stop believing it?" I said.

"At fifteen. You'd had a bad fever and I overheard him with the old healer. They were talking about the dose. He said if it went up she'd never wake. And the old healer said no, keep it low, the girl must live."

"You were fifteen," I said. "You could have told me."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you?"

For the first time she looked away.

"Because he said I'd be Luna of Cold Fork," she said. "He said Dalton would marry me when you were out of the way and the pack would finally be set right. He said I'd have a house and a title and everyone would look at me for once."

She laughed, and it cracked.

"I wanted to be looked at. Do you understand that, Miri? You were so easy to love. Everyone loved you. The pack, my mother, Dalton. You never even tried. I hated you every morning I handed you that cup, and every morning you said thank you and kissed my cheek."

I couldn't feel my hands.

"The photographs," I said.
