Chapter 9: Dalton's POV

Dalton's POV

I stood at the bakery window for a long time after she was gone.

The white wolf had looked at me for as long as it took me to say her name once.

Then Torren's black wolf had come up the street behind her, nudged her shoulder, and the two of them had turned and gone back up the mountain together.

She didn't look back.

I wasn't owed a look.

I put on my coat, paid the baker's wife for the room, and drove north through the dark.

I didn't ask myself why.

I knew why.

For a week I had asked what Miriam had done.

Now I was asking what had been done to her, and in front of whom, and I couldn't stop.

The king's men were still on the Cold Fork road at dawn.

They let me through, because a pack's Alpha has the right to enter his own pack's land, and the two guards on Harlan's door only looked at me as I went by.

I didn't go to Harlan's house.

I went to the elders' hall.

It was a squat wooden building behind the infirmary, and it held every record Cold Fork had kept since the pack was founded.

Births, deaths, matings, boundary disputes.

The cabinets were locked, and only Harlan carried the keys.

My father had never trusted a single elder with the whole set, so he'd had one made for the Alpha.

It had hung on a nail in the back of his desk for thirty years, and now it hung in mine.

I opened the cabinet marked with the year of Miriam's finding.

The book was where it should have been, plain and brown.

The page had been cut out.

I stared at the ragged edge.
