Chapter 7: The Cup

I didn't touch the cup.

I covered it with a cloth, opened the door, and called for Baltasar.

He came running, barefoot, his shirt half-buttoned.

All he had to do was smell the air in the room.

He froze.

"Who came in?"

"I don't know. I was asleep."

He approached the cup without touching it.

His eyes turned golden.

"Rue," he growled.

"And horsetail. Both together."

"What are they for?"

"To make the blood flow."

He lost his breath.

Then he turned around.

He strode down the hallway, and I felt the floor tremble beneath his steps.

I followed him half-dressed, a blanket draped over my shoulders.

I found him in the stables, holding a young blonde-haired maid by the collar of her blouse, her feet dangling in the air.

She was crying.

She had a leather bag in her hand.

"She gave it to me!" she shrieked. "I only brought the cup!"

"Who?"

"The lady of the Tower!"

Baltasar held her up for another second.

Then he opened his hand and let her drop to the floor.

The girl crawled backward.

Inside the bag were gold coins bearing the Aldana seal and a handkerchief embroidered with the initials "C. Q."
