Chapter 24: The Third Chair
"Yes," Noelle said.
She said it to Lila, but she was looking at Doyle over the top of the child's floury head.
"If your father says it's all right."
Doyle set his coffee on the table.
"Come to Ontario Street on Christmas Eve," he said. "There's something I have to burn first."
On Christmas Eve a thin snow was coming down on the yard behind the two-family house.
The steel case sat on the frozen grass beside a rusted burn barrel.
Doyle had carried it up from under the kitchen floor that morning, and the floorboard was nailed back down.
The state police had taken the pistol and both knives.
They had taken Abel's ledger too, in a clear evidence bag.
Abel had sat in a plastic chair at the barracks for nine hours and told them everything he had ever brokered.
He was out on bail with a hearing in March.
He stood now at the edge of the yard in a wool cap, holding a covered dish.
Harlan Cavanagh sat in the county jail with no bail, and Cade waited there for his kidnapping trial.
