Chapter 10: The Paper on the Steps

Conroy told the guard to open the gate.

Then he told him to stand in the hall with his phone out.

"Record everything," he said. "Sound too."

"Yes, sir."

"And turn on the front lights."

I went with him to the front door.

The lights came up, and the door opened onto a wide stone landing above the drive.

Adele stood at the foot of the long ramp in a camel coat with her hair perfect.

Howard stood a pace behind her with a leather folder under his arm.

"Conroy, dear," Adele said. "I'm so sorry about the hour."

"You are not sorry about anything, Mrs. Drummond."

"We came for Eden."

"My name is Lacey," I said.

She smiled at that, a small tolerant smile, the one she used on waiters.

"Eden. Of course. Sweetheart, we have been so worried. You've been through a great deal in three days."

"I've been fine."

"You've been taken advantage of."

"By whom?"

Her smile faltered for half a second.

"We have a paper," Howard said, and he held out the folder. "A very simple one. It will make everything easier for everybody."

He tapped it.

"You sign, your things are sent over, and a monthly sum goes to the Lacey family for as long as your father needs it."

"What's in it?"

"Read it."

I opened the folder.

The pages were typed, and a pen was clipped to the top.

I turned to the guard in the doorway, who had his phone up.

"Would you keep that on me?" I asked.

"Yes, Miss."

I read it out loud.

"I, Eden, formerly Drummond, relinquish all claim on the Drummond family trust, the Drummond name, and any property or inheritance of Howard and Adele Drummond."
