Chapter 4: The Second Account

"What do you want for it?" I asked.

"Four hundred thousand," Rex said. "I owe some people, and they've stopped being patient."

I had paid that exact debt once, in the other life, and it had bought me a funeral.

"No," I said.

His grin slipped. "Mr. Cabot."

"I'm not paying your debts. I'm not paying you. Tell me what you know, or go back to the party."

He studied my face, and whatever he saw there, it wasn't the man who had signed his checks.

"The study at the Brookline house," he said finally. "Bottom drawer, under the false panel. Green ledger. It's the real books for the second account."

"Why tell me?"

"Because he'll never pay me," Rex said, "and you might remember I helped."

He went back through the service door.

I stood in the hallway and thought about that grin. In the other life he'd had it right up to the street.

Marin found me there.

"Your bodyguard just left," she said. "Tell me it wasn't a threat."

"It was a tip."

"They're not different with that type." She looked at me. "What's in the study?"

I told her about the ledger.

She took out her phone and made a call, and ten minutes later the Thorpes' butler was standing at the staff door of the hotel in his overcoat.

He had a green ledger under his arm.

"I'd have brought it sooner, sir," he said. "Nobody asked."

At nine the next morning the executive team of Thorpe Industries sat at a long table on the fourteenth floor and waited for their chairman.
