Chapter 24: Fourth Floor

I dried the plate Lou handed me, and put it on the shelf.

Then I dried the next one, and the one after that.

"Say something," Lou said. "You're making me nervous."

"I'm staying."

His hands stopped in the water.

"I'm staying here, Dad. On the fourth floor. In the closet."

"It's a closet, Lena."

"It has a shelf Cal built, and a window that opens on the fire escape."

"You have more money than anyone I know."

"I have more money than anyone you know," I agreed. "That's why I get to choose."

He turned off the tap.

He dried his hands on his pants, which he knew I hated, and then he looked at me for a long time.

"I have been afraid since the day you walked up those stairs," he said. "I kept thinking, she'll look around and see what we've got, and she'll leave."

"I looked around," I said. "I saw what you've got."

His chin worked.

"I'm not going anywhere," I said. "And I'm not buying the building, before you ask."

"I wasn't going to ask."

"You were thinking it."

"I was thinking it," Lou admitted.

Footsteps came down the hall, two sets, one heavy and one quick.

Cal and Sean had been listening at the doorway, and neither of them had been very good at it.

"She's staying?" said Sean.

"She's staying," said Lou.

"She's staying!" Sean shouted down the hall, and Lexi's voice answered from the bedroom, "I heard!"
