Chapter 13: Page Forty-One
Page forty-one was a typed form with two photographs stapled to the top.
One photograph was me, asleep on my cell cot, taken from a camera in the ceiling.
The other was Garth in Cell 39, sitting on the floor with his forehead against the wall.
The date on his was the night I was moved in beside him.
I read the form standing in the middle of the county road, with the sun in my eyes.
"Pair One," it said. "Vessel 40, phoenix host. Anchor 39, wolf, cold-treated."
"Rising will consume the vessel's body in under four minutes."
"Only one subject type survives sustained contact with a rising. A body that makes no heat of its own cannot be burned by borrowed heat."
"Anchor 39 was frozen for this purpose. Cell 39 was assigned beside Vessel 40 on purpose."
"Wall contact encouraged. Acoustic baffle removed on day twelve."
My mouth went dry.
Day twelve.
