Chapter 18: The Pyre Room
Quill took us in through the east door at five minutes to midnight.
I walked down the corridor I had been dragged down fourteen months before, and I did not look at the cell doors.
Behind me came twenty-five people in borrowed coats, quiet as a funeral.
Garth walked at my left shoulder.
Rook had said not the wolf.
Nobody had told Garth.
The Pyre Room opened out ahead of us, round and grey and larger than I remembered.
Copper coils ran across the floor in rings.
Gas jets stood in a circle around the rim like the numbers on a clock.
At the center, a steel plate the size of a bed, scorched black from use.
On the north wall ran a long window of thick glass.
A row of men and women in good coats sat behind it in leather chairs.
Beside them, at a console, stood a man in a white lab coat over a grey cardigan, with reading glasses on his nose.
He lifted his hand to me.
Hedda sat in a chair against the east wall, upright, a blanket over her knees.
Two technicians flanked her.
Her braid was undone, and her eyes found mine across the room, huge and furious and clear.
