Chapter 20: The Warden's Stair
Rook was already running.
I saw his cardigan disappear through a steel door beside the console, and then the door slammed.
Behind the melted glass, the funders stampeded for the gallery exit in their good coats.
The exit was blocked.
A very large silver-brown bear sat in front of it with her shoulders hunched.
She looked at the woman in the camel coat.
The woman sat down on the floor.
"Hedda," I said hoarsely.
The bear huffed and did not move.
Garth got me to my feet.
My legs worked.
My clothes had burned to rags, and he pulled off his guard coat and wrapped me in it.
His hands stayed warm on my shoulders.
"Can you walk?" he said.
"Watch me."
We went through the steel door together, with the twenty-five behind us.
It opened onto the Warden's stair.
I had never seen it in the dark.
It was a long iron spiral winding up through the middle of the bunker.
The rail was worn smooth by one man's hand.
Rook was halfway up it.
