Chapter 17: The Vote
On Wednesday at ten, I sat at the head of the long table in the Brewer Labs meeting room, in the chair that had been Colton's.
Elliot sat at my right with a folder.
The woman from payroll sat at my left with a pen.
Along the walls stood every employee Colton had left, and in the second row, in a gray coat, sat Paisley with her hands in her lap.
The lawyer in the dark blazer stood by the door and watched it.
"This is a special meeting of the shareholders of Brewer Labs," I said. "I chair it for the Aster Fund, which holds the largest stake."
"There is one item. A vote on whether Colton Brewer remains chief executive."
A low noise ran through the staff.
"Seconded," said the woman from payroll.
"Second the second," said the junior engineer, from the back.
I almost smiled.
The glass doors banged open.
Colton walked in with his bandage on, his tie straight, and his mother half a step behind him in her church suit.
A small camera on a stick was clamped in his good hand.
The red light was on.
"Good morning, everyone," he said brightly. "I'm broadcasting this, in the interest of transparency."
"You're not on the agenda," I said.
"I'm the founder. I speak first."
He walked to the table and put one foot on it.
Then the other.
He stood in his polished shoes on the walnut surface, above all of us, with the camera held high.
"Eight years ago I started a company in my kitchen," he said. "I gave it everything. And on Sunday the woman I loved had me arrested in front of my team."
Nobody answered him.
"I've heard the rumors. That I stole. That I forged. That I cheated." His voice shook beautifully. "I won't answer them. I'll answer one question."
He lowered himself carefully down onto one knee, on the table, in front of me.
