Chapter 20: Seat at the Table
At six that evening the office still had no name, and Colton would plead guilty in the morning.
The engineer had written options on the whiteboard in green marker.
Brewer Never Again. Rose's Revenge. Sched Happens.
"Absolutely not," I said, to all three.
"Sched Happens is a good pun," said the engineer.
"It's a terrible pun," said the woman from payroll, who was eating soup at her desk. "I vote no, and I'm the one who signs your checks."
"You don't sign checks, you run payroll."
"Same thing, with fewer people watching."
Aunt Bea took the marker out of his hand, uncapped it, and wrote a single word at the bottom of the board.
Then she put the cap back on and went to refill the kettle.
I looked at the word and said nothing.
The elevator dinged, and I turned around.
A tall man in a gray overcoat stood in the hall holding his hat.
He had silver hair and a long, tired face. I had last seen it across a table at Marlow's, getting up to leave.
"Ms. Haverty," said the lead investor. "May I come in?"
The room went quiet.
"Do you have an appointment?" said Aunt Bea, from the kitchen.
"I don't."
"Then you sign the sheet."
He looked at the clipboard, took the pen on its string, and signed.
Name, time, who he was here to see.
He wrote, in a clear hand, Ms. Haverty, and the time to the minute.
"Come in," I said.
He walked into the middle of the room and stood there turning his hat.
"I walked out of that dinner on Friday," he said. "I heard a man shout that you had stolen from him, and I believed him because he was wearing a better suit."
"You did," I said.
"I was wrong, and I'm sorry. That's all I came to say."
