Chapter 7: Terms

Forrest stepped back from me. Not far. One step.

I pulled my cardigan up onto my shoulder.

Lettie looked at her brother. She looked at me. She looked at the shirt hanging out of his jeans.

Then she walked in, set the bottle and both glasses on the desk and pulled the cork with her teeth.

"Well," she said around it. "I brought two glasses. I'm going to need a third."

"Lettie," Forrest said.

"Sit down, both of you. Before somebody falls over."

I sat on the edge of the desk because my legs weren't working. Forrest stayed standing.

Lettie poured three fingers into each glass and pushed one at me.

"I came to tell you Brady texted me too," she said to Forrest. "Some foolishness about thirty-eight thousand dollars and a family secret. I figured we'd drink about it."

She looked at me over her glasses.

"So. Which one of you is the secret?"

I looked at Forrest. He looked back, waiting.

It was my rule, and he was leaving it to me.

So I told her.

Honey Vale. Ruin Me. The closet and the moving blankets. Episode twelve on the shelf behind her, the night of the bet.

I didn't tell her about the chair. Forrest did.

He said it plainly, arms crossed.

Lettie didn't interrupt once.

When he was done, she drank half her glass in one swallow.

"Two million?" she said to me.

"Two point three."

"Huh. Read me something sometime with a horse in it."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

Then she pointed a finger at her brother.

"You're forty-seven years old, and you got caught by your son's girlfriend with your pants down."

"Ex-girlfriend," I said.

"Ex-girlfriend. Thank you, sugar." She didn't take her eyes off him. "And now that boy's going to put it on the internet."

"Let him," Forrest said.
