Chapter 20: The Chamber
Arkady sat in the front row, right in front of the committee.
Two men in grey suits sat down behind him with leather folders.
"Not lawyers," Lev said in my ear. "The money. The bank that's paying for the tower. That one flew in from Zurich."
The surveyor in the third row had gone the colour of putty.
He was looking at the back of Arkady's head.
Item four came at twenty to eight.
Arkady's lawyer went first.
He talked for five minutes about "regeneration" and "three hundred and twelve new homes" and "a parade that is, regrettably, largely vacant and structurally unsound".
Then he paused.
"The committee will also be aware," he said, "of recent reports about the private life of the objectors' lead campaigner. Mr Sokolov regrets that his son's personal choices have been dragged into this. He asks only that the committee judge the scheme on the facts."
A few people near the front murmured.
Arkady bowed his head, very sorry.
The chair looked at her sheet.
"Hollie Haddow. Three minutes."
