Chapter 25: The Cook-Off
"He never met my father," I said.
"I know."
"Not once. Dad died five years before Dane ever walked into a kitchen with me."
I put the phone face down on the floor.
"Get dressed," I said. "You're carrying fifty gallons."
By eleven the Promenade was packed from Convention Hall to the end of the boardwalk shops.
Brine's tent was at the center, the biggest one, white canvas with navy trim.
It looked exactly like a wedding tent.
Twelve restaurants had booths under it in a long horseshoe.
Brine's was at the head, under a banner with Dane's face on it.
Ours was at the far end, by the trash cans.
Frankie had hung the six-dollar gold frame from our booth's crossbar.
"Low Tide Goes Out," right where everybody walking in would see it.
My grill cook stirred the first pot with a paddle.
My fry cook ladled.
Frankie's husband was setting up the speaker, a big black one on a stand, with a wireless microphone.
Barrett stood behind me with his sleeves rolled up, sweating, scar showing, and said nothing at all.
