Chapter 14: New Year's
Mr. Coe gave a New Year's Eve party in the ballroom every year, and that year was no different.
The town came up the drive at eight in pickups and minivans, with casseroles and kids and bottles in paper bags.
The residents' families came too.
The doctor's daughter brought him a new scarf, and he put it on and said it was the nicest thing he'd ever owned.
My mother sat at the head table beside Mr. Coe in her good blue sweater, with her hair parted on the right.
She laughed at everything he said.
I watched her from the ballroom door for a minute before my shift, and then I made myself stop.
A dozen of the guests were staying over, because the drive was icy and the Tamarack had empty rooms.
Erin had put them on the first and second floors and handed out keys with her wide smile.
At 11:15 Travis came out to the lobby with a glass of whiskey and leaned on my desk.
He'd been drinking since dinner, and his gel had given up.
"Grandpa says you're going to ruin the fireworks," he said.
