Chapter 16: The Doctor's Daughter
"Mine aren't gone yet," I said.
Mr. Coe stopped at the foot of the stairs with my mother on his arm.
"Last winter's are gone," I said. "You just told twenty people. So this winter's aren't. Not till the ice goes out."
He looked at me for a long moment, with the polite face he used on everyone.
"Happy New Year, Miss Duquette," he said, and took my mother up to his tower.
The deputy came up from the village that afternoon.
He wrote down that Erin Garrahan had gone out on the ice after the fireworks and gone through, and that twenty people saw it.
Every word of it was true.
Neil drove to Glens Falls to tell his parents.
He came back the next night and sat the desk with me until six without saying much.
On Sunday the doctor's daughter came up for lunch, the way she did every Sunday.
She was a tired, friendly woman of about forty-five in a ski jacket, and she kissed her father on top of his head.
